The Zimbabwe-Zambia (Zim-Zam) Energy Project Summit will be held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe from 18 to 20 November 2024, and it couldn’t come at a better time. As the two governments carry out innovative structural reforms to make energy projects more bankable, investment willingness is high. This is an opportunity to ensure a more sustainable energy future for Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The Zim-Zam Energy Project Summit will alternate with Zambia and will feature: Powering a sustainable energy future for Zimbabwe and Zambia: Unlocking opportunities for renewable energy, grid modernization and energy access.

Under the official sponsorship of Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Energy and Power Development, the 2024 summit will announce plans for energy projects between the two countries. Against a backdrop of ongoing drought, private sector investment in solar, geothermal and wind energy is complementing traditional hydropower projects, with the broader vision of opening a wider door to the global investment community.

Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), the summit sponsor, ZERA CEO Edington Mazambani said: “At a time when we are on the brink of a transformative era of energy, the Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Project Summit reflects our commitment to a sustainable future. We will Together we will explore the huge opportunities for renewable energy, modernize the grid and ensure access to energy for all. Together we can power a sustainable energy future for Zimbabwe and Zambia, unlocking the potential for growth, innovation and collaboration.”

The Zambia Environment Management Authority (ZEMA) recently invested US$1.76 billion in the energy sector, highlighting the urgent need for energy expansion in the region.

Devastating droughts in eastern and southern Africa set the stage for scenario planning to be so important, as dams have the potential to dry out regularly. Bilateral and regional infrastructure will be critical to manage the impacts and reduce dependence on primary energy sources. The urgent need for investment in grid infrastructure was just one of the topics discussed. Working with the mining industry to support economic growth and its vision for a clean energy future is another.

Manoj Patil, Director of Mining Engineering Services, said: “We have supported the mining industry in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 14 years and welcome the opportunity for this important dialogue that will unlock opportunities in the energy and infrastructure sectors in Zimbabwe and Zambia and provide Powering a Sustainable Future” Vinmart Group of Companies, also a sponsor of the summit.

Other themes driving change this November include creating attractive energy investment destinations and using innovative and profitable renewable energy solutions to achieve universal access goals, benefiting industry and consumers. By bringing key energy players together in one place with one goal in mind, the summit will drive projects in both countries to complete financing more quickly and establish a clear risk mitigation pathway.

It will connect Zimbabwean and Zambian ministries, utilities, regulators and energy organizations with international private sector stakeholders, institutional investors, private financiers, service and technology providers. Development finance institutions and multinational companies in attendance included the African Development Bank (AfDB), British International Investment Corporation (BII), FMO, Trade and Development Bank (TDB), Climate Fund Management and Standard Bank.

They spoke at the summit alongside a range of public sector leaders and stakeholders, most notably the Ministers of Zimbabwe and Zambia, the EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe, as well as representatives from ZERA, Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), ZARENA, ZESA Holdings and Rez.

Mortimer McKechnie, Senior Vice President of African Energy & Power Leaders, speaking on behalf of Marsh Group, also a sponsor of the summit, added: “This is an opportunity to come together, share experiences and innovative thinking . Connecting capital and mitigating risk can advance development in both countries, and Marsh is excited to participate in this summit.”
