Australian Open 2025: Jodie Burrage secures emotional Melbourne win after lengthy injury struggles

After a series of injuries, Burrage first considered quitting the sport in 2020, but fought back to enjoy the biggest success of her career.

In 2023, she won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon with a memorable performance on Center Court in the second round, while also reaching the first round of that year’s U.S. Open win.

Burlage reached a career-high world ranking of No. 84 when her progress derailed again.

In February, she needed surgery on a ruptured tendon in her wrist, the fourth surgery of her career. In April, she suffered another blow as she prepared to return to competitive racing.

Burrage ruptured ankle ligaments during practice with Britain’s No. 1 Katie Boulter, which did not require surgery but sidelined her for another 10 weeks.

After making her comeback on the lower-level ITF Futures Tour, she broke down in tears during training and questioned whether it was worth it.

However, she persevered and has now become the first Briton to win the Australian Open singles title this year.

British men’s singles No. 1 Jack Draper and Jacob Fearnley, The fast-rising Scot will face Nick Kyrgios later on Monday.
