Chad Dismisses Foiled Attack as Work of Disorganized Group – Africa.com
Chadian security forces successfully thwarted an unorganized attack on the presidential palace in N’Djamena on Wednesday night. According to a government spokesman, the attackers, consisting of 24 drunken men armed with knives and machetes, drove to the compound, got off at the gate due to vehicle breakdown, and killed a presidential guard and injured two others. The group then entered the compound, whereupon a group of guards opened fire, killing 18 attackers and detaining six. Kullamala dismissed the act as “completely incomprehensible” and said it was probably not an act of terrorism. Although there is still a military presence near the compound, normalcy returned to N’Djamena on Thursday morning and the situation was under control. However, Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Deby, who came to power in 2021 after the death of his father, long-time ruler Idriss Deby, remains politically fragile in the country.
