Borja Sainz: Norwich City top scorer banned for six matches for spitting
Norwich City’s top scorer Borja Sainz has been banned for six games after admitting spitting at Sunderland player Chris Mepham in December.
The Championship’s top scorer was also fined £12,000 by the Football Association for an incident that occurred in the 74th minute of the game. Norwich lost 2-1 At the Stadium of Light.
The Spaniard has scored 16 goals for the Canaries this season but has failed to add to that tally since November. He said he took “full responsibility” and “deeply regretted” his actions.
“Spitting at an opponent is completely out of character for me and my reaction was unacceptable,” Sainz said.
“I would like to apologize directly to the opposing player, Chris Mepham, for my actions.
“Additionally, I apologize to my teammates, coaching staff and fans. I am deeply disappointed in myself and the way I have let all of you down with my actions.”
