China Deepens Engagement with Africa Amidst Western Retreat – Africa.com
China’s top diplomat, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, embarked on his annual New Year’s tour of Africa on Sunday, January 6, continuing a 35-year tradition aimed at strengthening Beijing’s influence on the continent. His visits to Namibia, the Republic of Congo, Chad and Nigeria underscored China’s commitment to Africa, which contrasts with waning European engagement and shifting U.S. priorities. While global powers focus on issues such as the war in Ukraine and domestic politics, China is increasing financial support for Africa’s debt-ridden economies. Beyond that, Beijing is seeking more significant mineral deals with the resource-rich continent and finding new markets for its exports, particularly electric vehicles and solar panels. With Africa’s voting power at the United Nations, China is also working to reshape global institutions to suit its interests. Wang Yi’s trip highlights the growing partnership between China and countries on the African continent, especially in the areas of economic development, security and partnership.
