BMW Goes Big for Panoramic iDrive Preview – Video

BMW launches panoramic iDrive preview version

BMW has previewed its next-generation dashboard technology, with a screen larger than that of the Neue Klasse electric car due out next year. Be the first to take a look at the BMW Panoramic iDrive with OS X, three-layer display and artificial intelligence voice assistant at CES 2025.

Now we’ve just got a concrete look at the technology that will be in every future BMW car. Meet the new Panorama IDrive with OS X displayed on this comically large dashboard. Now, Panoramic IDrive is based on 3 different technologies brought by BMW. Let’s get to the really exciting part first. Panoramic display at the top of the dashboard. This is a pillar-to-pillar display that extends all the way to the dashboard and is visible. For everyone in the car in front of the driver, you can get the information the driver needs such as speed, mileage and more in the digital instrument cluster. You also have space for 6 widgets, visible to everyone in the car. In the demo, they showed things like what’s playing or air quality monitoring or weather, but you can put all kinds of content in there and it will be associated with your BMW profile. So when you get in the car, you see what you like to see, but when other people you share the car with get in, they see something completely different. It’s all there. A 3D head-up display projected onto the windshield. So while you’re driving, you can navigate turn-by-turn with real-time turn-by-turn guidance like lane guidance or live turn-by-turn preview. When you put the car into autonomous driving mode or use any of these driver assistance features, these are also overlaid into the same 3D head-up display area. Of course the third part is the main display. It has a parallelogram shape instead of the regular rectangle you will see, but here you will get something like a regular 3D map for navigation. There are also prediction widgets that you can swipe to quickly access various things you might need to do while driving. Because this is CES, you know there’s artificial intelligence built into the dashboard here, in the form of the BMW Assistant, a little emoji guy who lives in the panoramic display and answers Hey BMW commands. You can talk to that person and ask it to give you directions on where you want to go, and it will also connect with the rest of the vehicle’s systems. So when it’s time to go into Sport mode, you can say, Hey BMW. Activate sport mode and the entire car gets hotter. Now, the most interesting thing is that it’s not a concept. BMW says the dashboard you see here, albeit in a more manageable size, is the same technology you’ll see in every BMW car when the new Neue-grade electric cars are launched in the near future. If you want to learn more about this technology, be sure to visit CNET.com, where we’ve taken a deeper dive into it, and where you’ll also find the rest of our CES 2025 coverage. Drive safe and I’ll see you there.
