Wales and Cardiff centre Meirion Roberts dies aged 90
Cardiff great Merion Roberts dies aged 90.
Born in the village of Abergwyngregyn in north Wales, Roberts played as a center forward for Wales High School in 1953 and as a senior player for London Wales before joining Cardiff in 1958.
He made 225 appearances in eight seasons at Arms Park, scoring 58 goals and serving as club captain in the 1964-65 season.
Roberts made eight appearances for Wales between 1960 and 1963, winning against South Africa in 1961 with the Barbarians.
After hanging up his boots, Roberts coached Cardiff Medical Team RFC for more than 20 years.
The club said on social media: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that the great Merion Roberts passed away this morning at the age of 90.
“A wonderful man in every way and a true legend in the medical community.”
