Jacob Fearnley: British number three gets first Davis Cup call-up for Great Britain’s tie against Japan
Jacob Fearnley has received a first call-up to England’s Davis Cup squad for the upcoming match against Japan.
Scot Fearnley, 23, was ranked outside the top 600 a year ago but won his first four ATP Challenger titles in 2024 and rose to No. 86 in the world.
Cameron Norrie, Billy Harris and former Wimbledon doubles champion Neil Skupski have also been selected by GB captain Leon Smith.
British number one Jack Draper has chosen to sit out the first qualifying round to support his recovery from a hip injury.
There is no place for Dan Evans, who says he is “long and seriously” considering ending his Davis Cup career after Great Britain lost the final to Canada in September.
Evans, 34, has played in 28 Davis Cup matches and was a substitute when the team won their last title in 2015, but has slipped to No. 160 in the world and has failed to qualify for the Australian Open. Lost in the first round.
Best-of-five games against Japan will be played on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at Miki’s Bourbon Bean Dome.
The winner will face Germany or Israel in September for a spot in the final.
