United Cup: Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz guide US to title
Taylor Fritz defeated Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in a third-set tiebreaker to give the United States a win in the Fed Cup final in Sydney.
In the first women’s singles match, Coco Gauff defeated Iga Swiatek in straight sets, winning the world number four with a score of 6-4 5-7 7-6 (7-4).
This is the second time the United States has won the mixed team event after winning the mixed team event for the first time in 2023.
World No. 3 Gauff defeated former world No. 1 Swiatek for the second time in a row after beating former world No. 1 Swiatek at the WTA Year-End Finals in Riyadh last November.
The Pole, now world No. 2, took a medical timeout while trailing 5-4 in the second set and had a bandage on her left thigh, something that has bothered her all week after losing 6-4 6-4. Her left thigh was tied up. He left the courtroom in tears, walking carefully.
The victory capped a perfect week for 20-year-old Gauff, who has won all six of her previous matches in singles and doubles as she continues preparations for the Australian Open, which kicks off in Melbourne on January 12.
