Arab scholars from around the globe convene in Qatar to advance science and research in and for the Arab world – Africa.com
Arab Global Scholars (AGS) (https://ArabGlobalScholars.org/) community gathered at Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) in Qatar Foundation Education City last week to herald the latest development in a plan to foster a renaissance in contemporary Arab science and research.
AGS is an initiative led by Qatar Foundation that aims to reconnect scholars and intellectuals with roots in the Arab world to their region, contributing to its positive development and long-term future.
With its establishment dating back nearly two decades, AGS has consolidated into an innovation-focused community connecting 895 Arab academics as well as research institutions, universities and industry partners to advance science, research and Capacity building projects. Current AGS member and partner organizations include more than 14 major institutions in Qatar and beyond. Individual members work with some of the world’s leading public and private sector entities, including GE HealthCare, Humanarian Tracker and Pfizer.
Commenting on the gathering, His Highness Sheikha Moza bint Al Nasser, Chairman of the Qatar Foundation, said: “We host the annual Arab Global Scholars Gathering as a natural follow-up to the Conference of Arab Expatriate Scientists, which we launched in 2006. Building on His Highness’s remarks, Dr. Ahmad M. Hasnah, President of HBKU, said: “The Arab Global Scholars Program stems from the role played by Qatar Foundation in advancing science, education and research in Qatar and the region . We believe that these elements are important tools for national development and prosperity. By connecting Arab minds, AGS builds strong bridges between people, countries and institutions, and supports economic development, ultimately resulting in a vibrant and influential society. of the Arab world.”
The three-day event brings together prominent Arab experts working in the sciences and humanities from around the world to engage in dialogue around globally relevant areas such as precision health and biotechnology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, sustainable development and environmental health.
Introducing advanced AGS digital platform (https://ArabGlobalScholars.org/), an immersive and interactive space that connects members to a wealth of collaboration opportunities, from research projects to academic and student exchanges, as well as professional development events, was a key element of the event’s opening day.
In establishing this platform, AGS recognizes that geographical borders are no longer a barrier to the convergence of Arab expertise and the creation of a knowledge hub that can inspire current and future generations to develop Arab-inspired solutions to global challenges.
Scholars in attendance include Dr. Dina Katabi, director of the MIT Center for Wireless Networks and Mobile Computing and CEO of Emerald Innovations; Dr. Shihab Kuran, co-founder and CEO of Power Edison; Dr. Taha Kass-Hout, global chief technology officer, GE Healthcare Office; Dr. Usama Fayyad, inaugural executive director of the Institute for Experiential Artificial Intelligence at Northeastern University, and other experts from the public and private sectors.
“While the Arab world faces significant challenges, they are by no means insurmountable. Each issue requires a unique Arab response that prioritizes a deep regional understanding of the current issues, as well as academia, scientists and industry Working together to positively shape the Arab future, AGS is well-placed to promote and support such initiatives, turning obstacles into opportunities in the process,” said Dr. Katabi.
Scholars engaged in conversation about the importance of Arab-inspired efforts to address the myriad educational, technological, social and economic challenges facing the region. Recent developments in artificial intelligence and generative artificial intelligence are also discussed, as well as the key role that Arab intellectuals can play in post-conflict recovery and reconstruction and in rebuilding conflict-affected communities.
