The announcement stated that Clinton has served as first lady, senator, secretary of state, and the first woman nominated by a major political party for president, “making history many times in public service over decades.”

Posthumous recipients of the award include former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, former Defense Secretary Ash Carter and former Michigan Governor George W. Romney.

Several of the recipients are longtime donors to Biden and the Democratic Party.
The award will be presented at the White House later Saturday.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is “awarded to an individual who has made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values ​​or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant social, public or private endeavors,” according to the White House.
The award was established in 1963 by the late President John F. Kennedy, brother of Robert F. Kennedy.
