Jake Wightman eyes Scottish 3,000m title in Glasgow

Former 1500m world champion Jake Wightman tests over 3,000m in Glasgow on Saturday as he looks to prove he has overcome last year’s injury problems to start his 2025 season.

The 30-year-old Scot, who will claim the sprint world title in 2022 but had to withdraw from last year’s Paris Olympics, is heading north from his base in Manchester to compete in the Scottish 3000m Championships at the Emirates Stadium.

Glasgow Athletics’ Miler Meet event combines New Year’s celebrations with events in the high jump, long jump, shot put, triple jump and pole vault, as well as a series of 800m and 3,000m events starting at 14:00 GMT.

The men’s and women’s races – three 800m races and 11 3,000m races – will take place at different levels until Whiteman takes the top spot in the final at around 16:40.

His opponents in the men’s main event include England international Callum Elson, England’s Cambridge and Coleridge University teammate Thomas Bridger and Morpeth’s James Young.

Contenders for the women’s title include Elsa Palmer of Edinburgh AC, Sarah Tait of Lasswade, Edinburgh University Hare and Hounds Sarah Calvert of University Hare & Hounds and Stefanie Tucker of Cambuslang Harriers.

Competitors in the 800m include Scotland international Hannah Cameron from Aberdeen AAC and Jill Cherry from Victoria Park City in Glasgow.
