Fred Kerley: US Olympic sprinter tasered after police confrontation
U.S. Olympic sprinter Fred Klee was tased and arrested by police following a confrontation with police in Miami, Florida.
The 29-year-old, who won a 100m bronze medal at last summer’s Paris Olympics, faces charges of assault, resisting police and breach of peace following Thursday night’s incident.
Police are investigating a separate incident in which Kerley approached them in an “aggressive manner” because he was concerned about his car, according to the police report.
Klee “continued to resist officers and took evasive maneuvers to avoid arrest” before being tackled to the ground by four officers, the report said.
Police body camera footage shows Klee standing up before being tased and falling to the ground before being taken into custody.
Miami local media reports, external Klee appeared in court on Friday and is now free on bail.
His lawyer said the incident was “a total misunderstanding”.
In addition to his bronze medal in Paris, Klee also won a silver medal in the 100 meters at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and a gold medal at the 2022 World Championships.
He also won world gold medals in the 4x100m and 4x400m and set the sixth-fastest 100m time in history with a time of 9.76 seconds.
