Australia v India: Jasprit Bumrah strikes late but hosts on top in Sydney

Australia bowled out India for 185 on day one of the fifth Test, but an excited Jasprit Bumrah bowled the last ball of the day to give the late visitors a boost .

Bumrah had opener Usman Khawaja caught at second slip and turned to face 19-year-old Sam Konstas to celebrate, And India felt both batsmen wasted time in the final over.

The tourists trailed 2-1 in the best-of-five series and needed a win to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having earlier taken an early lead at the table at a packed Sydney Stadium.

They ruled out struggling skipper Rohit Sharma but the move did little to improve the fortunes of their top-order side, with Scott Boland taking 4-31.

India were 72-4 when Boland dismissed Virat Kohli for 17 and were 120-6 when Rishabh Pant led the scoring with a cautious 40 Behind, Nitish Kumar Reddy fell behind with consecutive balls.

But Bumrah, who captained India in Rohit’s place, hit three fours and a six in 17 off 22 balls to improve the total and his dismissal set up India’s match against Australia before the end of the match. Three rounds of competition were left.

The hosts looked to have survived, with Bumrah accusing Khawaja of wasting time in the final over before exchanging words with Constas, with Australia cutting the clock short to ensure there was no time for another over.

Bumrah had the last laugh, however, as he dismissed Khawaja for the sixth time in the series, the left-hander giving the edge to KL Rahul, who caught a beautiful low catch.

All it took was a draw for Australia to regain the title with a score of 9-1.

India need a win to stay in contention for the World Test Championship final later this year.
