United Cup: Great Britain’s Billy Harris loses to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz before Katie Boulter plays Iga Swiatek

Britain’s hopes of reaching the Fed Cup semi-finals were ended by Poland after Katie Boulter agonizingly failed to defeat five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek.

Bolt, 28, needed victory to take the best-of-three tie into the decider doubles but lost to world number two Swiatek 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-4 in Sydney .

After nearly three hours of exciting play, the two players embraced warmly in front of the net.

“I was exhausted. I’m glad I won so I didn’t have to play doubles,” Swiatek said.

“This game is so crazy, there are so many changes in momentum.”

After Billy Harris’ narrow defeat to former world number six Hubert Hurkacz, Team GB’s hopes are pinning their hopes on Bolt over the five-time Grand Slam The impact of the championship.

Harris, 29, defeated 16th-ranked Hurkacs in the first match of a best-of-three set before falling 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.

Poland were one of the pre-tournament favorites and will face Kazakhstan in Friday’s semi-finals.
