Manchester United: Relegation ‘a possibility’ says Ruben Amorim
Four teams have been relegated in the Premier League era, with Manchester United currently in 14th place at the start of the year. Leeds United was the past two seasons ago.
Of course, that may not be the case, but on evidence of events at Old Trafford, an infusion of new players may be needed when the transfer window opens on January 1.
On top of this, the club is short of cash, with a loss of £113.2 million in the financial year to June 2024.
“We don’t have that possibility in January if we don’t take some players away,” Amorim said. “You know better than I do.
“It’s not like I came here knowing I could spend money and change the team.”
Selling players could be an option.
But what is the market for Casemiro? He is a Brazilian legend at Real Madrid but is now a visitor to the Premier League with 18 months left on his contract.
Or Joshua Zirkzee, who signed a five-year deal from Bologna for £36.5m in the summer but lasted just 33 minutes in the chaos before being replaced by Kobe Bryant · Kobbie Mainoo was substituted and won warm applause from the home fans.
“This is a very difficult moment,” Amorim said. “He is a human being.”
Zirkzee received a more appreciative response when he returned to the bench after returning to the dressing room, but it remains to be seen how Amorim has found a valuable place in the Netherlands international’s squad.
Then there’s Marcus Rashford. The England striker returned to the squad after missing four games but remained on the bench as United suffered a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions and a third consecutive league defeat in which they also No goals were scored.
Amorim says he’s not making a point – but if Rashford doesn’t earn a place in this squad, his manager really can’t think highly of him.
“I think about the team and you think about Marcus,” he said later. “I just want to win games.”
