Australia v India: Hosts take series lead with win in Melbourne

Australia defeated India by 184 runs in the fourth Test in Melbourne to take a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India was targeting 340 runs in 92 overs and batted cautiously throughout the innings with little ambition to win.

But a brilliant bowling display in the evening’s match saw Australia take the last seven wickets for just 34 runs, while India were bowled out for 155 in the final hour.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal looked determined to seal a hard-fought draw for India after slipping to 33-3 in the last over, but with 21 overs remaining , he hit 84 off 208 balls, trailing behind Pat Cummins.

Jaiswal had earlier played a wicketless session in the afternoon session with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who had made 30 off 104 balls, but they Was the only hitter to break double figures.

Pant’s departure after tea sparked a collapse as he lost patience and lashed out at Travis Head, waiting for another wasteful dismissal.

Cummins and Scott Boland took three wickets each while spinner Nathan Lyon took two wickets in the second over of the day after his batting heroics. Lost by 41 runs, Australia were bowled out for 234 runs.

He was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah who finished with figures of 5-57 in another brilliant performance.

The series will conclude in Sydney on January 2, with a win giving Australia a place in the World Test Championship final.
