Grand Slam of Darts 2024: Luke Humphries knocked out at group stage
Defending champion and world number one Luke Humphries suffered a shock group stage exit from the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.
Humphries lost 5-3 to fellow Englishman James Wade in his second match, having previously lost to Austrian Robbie John Rodriguez on day one.
World champion Humphries shot a 130 to lead 3-2, but Wade held on to win the next three sets.
Rodriguez and Wade will face off in the final Group A game to determine who will play alongside Mickey Mansell in the next round.
Gary Anderson secured promotion with a thrilling 5-4 victory over three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen.
Anderson shot a 136 to lead 4-3 before Van Gerwen launched a counterattack to force a decider, which the Scotsman easily won with an average of 105.19.
Van Gerwen needs to beat Ryan Joyce in the next group game to advance.
Former world champion Michael Smith defeated Jermaine Wattimena 5-1, who secured his qualification with two wins and two losses.
Smith defeated Mensur Sujovic on day one, meaning he can still qualify by defeating Mike De Dekker on Monday.
Peter Wright was also winless after being beaten by Leonard Gates in the afternoon session, while Rob Cross lost 5-3 to Martin Martin Lukeman.
Dave Chisnall and Stephen Bunting lost to Ross Smith and Gian van Veen respectively, with Netherlands’ Noah Lin Noa-Lynn van Leuven was eliminated by Ryan Joyce.
Ireland’s Keane Barry responded after beating Luke Littler 5-0 on day one, defeating Lourence Ilagan 5-3 , make sure you are qualified to compete.
The group stages will continue on Monday, with the last 16 games starting on Wednesday, followed by the semi-finals and final on Sunday, November 17.
