Novak Djokovic credits coach Andy Murray with bringing ‘fresh look’ to his game

Novak Djokovic has praised Andy Murray for “bringing a fresh look” to his game as he prepares for his first match since appointing his long-time rival as his new coach.

Djokovic, a record 24-time Grand Slam champion, will start his 2025 season next week at the Brisbane International against Australian Rinky Hijikata.

The 37-year-old Serbian will miss the match with Britain’s three-time Grand Slam champion Murray. Retired from tennis in Augustand then they gathered in Brisbane ahead of the Australian Open, which starts on January 12.

“As one of the greatest opponents I’ve ever faced, he has a unique perspective on my game. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of my game,” Djokovic said of Murray.

“He hasn’t been on tour until recently, so he knows all the other best players in the world right now, the young guys, and the weaknesses and strengths in their games. I’m looking forward to it, I’m really looking forward to it.

“I think he brings a whole new side to my game that I will undoubtedly be able to benefit from on the court. And he has a championship mentality and I’m sure we will work well together.”

Djokovic Announced in November He will work with Murray until the end of the Australian Open before deciding whether to enter into a long-term partnership.

The Olympic gold medalist is aiming to win his 100th ATP singles title in Brisbane before chasing a record 11th Australian Open title.

Victory at Melbourne Park next month would give Djokovic (currently tied with Margaret Court on 24) the record for most Grand Slam titles.

Djokovic failed to win one of the four annual majors in the 2024 season (the second time this has happened since 2010), and after falling to world seventh, he plans to make a comeback in 2025 A busier schedule.

“I plan to play a few more matches than last season,” Djokovic said.

“Hopefully the level will also increase so I will hopefully win some tournaments and get higher in the rankings.”
