Systane eye drops recalled due to potential fungal contamination

Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF is being recalled after a customer complained “foreign matter was found inside the sealed single-use vial,” the FDA said. The material was determined to be of fungal nature.
The recalled eye drops are used to treat dry eye symptoms and are sold in ready-to-use single bottles of 25 capsules. The lot number is 10101 and has an expiration date of September 2025.

Fungal contamination of eye products is known to cause eye infection.
“If infection occurs, it may be vision-threatening and, in rare cases, life-threatening in immunocompromised patients,” the FDA states on its website.
Alcon Laboratories, the company that manufactures Systane, has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.
