Euro 2016 foe to friend – Chris Coleman’s Belgian reunion
“They will never let me forget 2016 at any given moment,” said Coleman, who moved to Leuven after resigning as head coach of Cypriot side AEL Limassol last November.
“It’s etched in their memory. In my first press conference there were a lot of questions about that period and the history between Wales and Belgium. Of all the places I could go next!
“Well, there was that game in the quarter-finals, but we had a lot of other great games against Belgium in Brussels and Cardiff.
“Like Wales, Belgium is a very proud country. They want their national team to do well.
“It’s the same situation with us – when there are negative results or performances, it’s not good.
“So in 2016 I think they thought it would be a tough game against Wales but they could probably get into the semi-finals. The game was on Belgium’s doorstep in Lille so everything was set up well for them. Said, but everything went against them that night.
“They will never forget it but there is no resentment towards me. I talk to the supporters about it all the time and they always smile.”
