At least three killed in bus crash in Norway

A bus accident in Norway has killed at least three people, police said.

The accident occurred at around 13:30 local time (12:30 GMT) in the Hasel district on the country’s northwest coast.

The bus ran off the road and ended up partially in Lake Ashuatnet, authorities said in a news release.

There were 58 people believed to be on board the plane at the time of the crash, many of whom police said were foreigners.

In addition to the death toll, four people were seriously injured, police said.

Three people were taken to Stoke Markness Hospital by rescue helicopter, while the other passengers were taken to a nearby school.

According to local media reports, everyone has been removed from the vehicle.

The Norwegian Red Cross said on social media that it was sending a team to help deal with the “serious bus accident” on the E10 highway.

Fire, ambulance and police teams have also been working at the scene.

Heavy snowfall and strong winds were reported in the area, making rescue efforts difficult.

Public broadcaster NRK reported that the bus was traveling from the town of Narvik to the Lofoten Islands.

Vidar Thom Benjaminsen, the mayor of the nearby district of Wogan, said a “crisis team” had been set up and the family had been assigned a local hotel to serve as a reception centre.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the accident was a “very serious situation” and his thoughts were with everyone affected.
