Germany supports nutrition and self-reliance for refugees in Uganda
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) welcomes a €1 million contribution from Germany, through the German Foreign Office, to support nutrition and income-generating activities for more than 254,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Uganda.
The donation will enable WFP to provide food assistance to new arrivals and the most vulnerable refugees, while supporting self-reliance activities, such as agriculture, for those vulnerable.
“The number of refugees in Uganda has almost tripled over the past decade, straining scarce humanitarian resources,” said Abdirahman Meygag, WFP country director in Uganda. “This funding will help WFP meet the urgent needs of newcomers and promote sustainable livelihoods for those experiencing protracted crises.”
Uganda hosts 1.7 million refugees and asylum seekers, up from 600,000 in 2014. The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) estimates that some 135,000 refugees have arrived in Uganda since the beginning of the year, mainly due to ongoing conflict and climate shocks in neighboring countries. Examples include the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan and most recently Sudan.
WFP provides food assistance in the form of cash and in-kind to 1.4 million refugees in Uganda, with 60% of full rations for the most vulnerable refugees and 30% for moderately vulnerable refugees. New arrivals receive full rations for the first three months. WFP also supports 52,000 refugees and Ugandan nationals in livelihood strengthening activities to support the transition to self-reliance.
