This application uses Apple Intelligence to generate custom images on your device. You can choose from a list of suggested prompts or enter your own image description, and your iPhone will create the image.
Here’s what you need to know about Image Playground on iOS 18.2. Note that before using Apple Intelligence, you must request it for your iPhone. To do this, go to Settings > Apple Intelligence and Siri and click Get Apple Intelligence.
Where is the Image Playground on my iPhone?
If you have an iPhone compatible with iOS 18.2, Image Playground will be a new app on your home screen. The icon looks like a kitten in a soap bubble.
You can also access the Image Playground in Messages. Here’s how.
1. Open the message.
2. Click to enter the chat.
3. Click the plus sign (+) symbol next to the text box.
4. tap Image Playground.
How does the Image Playground work?
Image Playground uses Apple Intelligence on your iPhone and works similarly to other devices AI image generator. Once you open the app, you can enter a description of the image you want to create in the text box or select suggestions. (Check out CNET’s guide Expert Image Tips.)
But you can’t use too many suggested hints or descriptors. You can only use up to six suggestions and descriptors at a time. If you try to use more, Image Playground will start replacing old suggestions with new ones. If you have too many suggestions or descriptors, you may get a message: “Try fewer concepts”. You can also add or remove these suggested prompts and descriptors at any time during the creation process.
You can also create images from photos in your gallery. Click the plus sign (+) symbol in the lower right corner of the application and select Select photo. This will allow you to use one of your own images as inspiration for the Image Playground. You can also take a photo by clicking Photograph And your new photo will be used.
If you click the plus sign (+) symbol in the lower right corner of the app, you can also choose the style of the generated image. There are two styles to choose from: the default animation, which is similar to a 3D image, and the illustration, which is more flat and cartoony. Apple may add more styles in the future.
There is also an option to insert generated characters into these images. Click on the character silhouette in the lower right corner of Image Playground, click appearance In two passes, you can generate the character and insert it into your image.
Once you are satisfied with the image, click complete Located in the upper right corner of the app, the image will be saved to the app.
The next time you open the Image Playground, you’ll see all your saved images in one place. Click the plus sign (+) symbol across the bottom of the screen to create a new image.
After saving the generated image, can I edit it in the Image Playground?
After creating an image in the app, you can go back and edit it further. Open the app and tap on the generated image you want to edit, then tap edit in the lower right corner of the screen. You can select more suggestions, enter another descriptor, or change the art style.
Will Image Playground always produce images?
Technically speaking, yes, it will always produce an image. Whether this is what you’re looking for is another matter. I entered the prompts “chef,” “bow tie,” and “volcano,” and got a picture of a kitchen with a volcano growing out of the countertop. Sadly, there’s no chef or bow tie in sight – maybe the volcano snatched them away?
Apple may continue to improve the Image Playground in the future, so hopefully the images will match your descriptors more closely. Meanwhile, we have the Kitchen Volcano.
