Adele, England & Man Utd: Gareth Southgate’s Desert Island Discs

Gareth Southgate has told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs he has decided to step down as England manager before the end of Euro 2024.

The 54-year-old was a guest on the latest episode of the long-running show, explaining to host Lauren that he chose Adele’s “Someone Like You” as the eight songs he would take with him while stranded on a desert island one. Laverne said he “continued to play towards the end of the last European Championship” because “I knew I was leaving”.

Southgate Resigned Taking over as manager in July, two days after England retired defeated 2-1 Defeated by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

However, he revealed that he had decided before the final that “it was time to make changes in all aspects.”

Speaking of Adele’s song, Southgate said: “There are a lot of words in it that, even if I hear it today, it relates to my relationship with England.”

The song, which appeared on Adele’s 2011 album 21, is written from the perspective of a woman speaking to her ex-partner.

“They have to move on and you wish them the best and there are regrets but actually memories are made,” Southgate explained.

The former midfielder and defender played 102 games for his country during eight years in charge and is the only England men’s team to reach a major final since 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey Head coach, he has reached two finals – Euro 2020 and Euro 2020. Euro 2024.

He told Desert Island Discs that he was “not opposed” to doing something “completely different” and that his next career move “wouldn’t necessarily be in coaching.”

“When you’re a coach and your job is one of the most important jobs, how do you follow that up?” Southgate said.
