Rangers: Philippe Clement on cup final penalty and Willie Collum

Manager Philippe Clement said Rangers “don’t need negative motivation” as he urged his players to forget about the Carabao Cup’s final penalty decision.

Willie Collum, the Scottish Football Association’s head of refereeing operations, said the Video Assistant Referee official made a “very, very poor” and “unacceptable” decision in not awarding a penalty against Rangers against Celtic.

Ibrox lost the penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw when Vaclav Cerny started to pull outside the Celtic penalty area but continued to pull and was awarded a free kick but VAR did not intervene .

However Clement said Rangers must “put it in the back of our minds and stop thinking about it” as they prepare for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Dundee.

“You can’t keep thinking about it. We need to focus now and get three points. Don’t look back,” said the Belgian, whose side trail league leaders Celtic by 11 points.

“What happened in this moment will stay with us for the rest of our lives. But we need to focus on the present now.

“We don’t need negative motivation. We want to win games and win trophies.

“We were the team that created the most chances in the game and the team that deserved penalties. That’s a lot in cup finals – usually you win at the end.”
