The Showdown: Rory McIlroy & Scottie Scheffler beat Bryson DeChambeau & Brooks Koepka in PGA Tour-LIV Golf duel
Since the players are wearing microphones throughout the game, this promises to lead to some interesting exchanges on the field.
The standard was set the day before the tournament, when DeChambeau made a pointed quip about McIlroy’s stunning collapse at the U.S. Open in June.
McIlroy gave up a two-shot lead with five holes to play at Pinewood, missing a golden opportunity to end a decade-long major drought and handing the title to DeChambeau.
On the practice court, McIlroy tried to add to the excitement, saying he wanted to avenge the painful experience by facing the American in singles.
“I want to fight Bryson and try to make him make amends for what he did to me at the U.S. Open,” he said.
DeChambeau immediately recognized his opportunity. “To be fair, you did it to yourself,” was the deadpan reply.
Arguably the funniest moment of the day was when McIlroy and Scheffler received their winnings – $10 million worth of cryptocurrency wallets from tournament sponsors.
“What are you going to do with your winnings?” McIlroy smiled as he asked Scheffler, who earned more than $29 million in winnings during a stunning 2024 season.
“I don’t know,” Scheffler said, confused.
The Masters champion added: “You know, I don’t know much about cryptocurrencies, but it was a good motivation to do some research and figure out what’s going on.”
