Alessia Russo: Arsenal striker’s goals rush under Renee Slegers continues against Bayern Munich
Eleven games. Starts on November. Ten goals.
Alessia Russo has reaped the rewards of her hard work under interim Arsenal manager Renee Sleggs, with her fine form continuing in the Gunners’ final game before the winter break.
The 25-year-old scored Arsenal’s second goal of Wednesday’s game 3-2 comeback win Against Bayern Munich, they secured first place in the Women’s Champions League group.
Russo has 11 goals this season, 10 of which have come under Slegs, six of which have come in her last four games.
“I’m my own biggest critic and I know sometimes I definitely didn’t score as much as I wanted to,” Russo told DAZN after the game.
“As a striker you always have moments and spells. It’s about riding the wave and when things are not going well, it’s about peeling it back and focusing on training and that’s what I did.”
England international Russo has started every game under Slagers since Jonas Advall Resign as head coach October.
Russo started seven of the first nine games of the season under the Swede, scoring just once.
“I’m just enjoying my football,” Russo said. “We played really well and got really important results. We really enjoyed ourselves, found a lot of different connections on the pitch and often got results in different ways.
“We’ve been working on a lot of different things, but in the final third, how we find different connections, how we create different types of attacks. It starts in training and we’re lucky to find it in games as well.
“It’s great, we as players want more, we want to take responsibility and that’s what we’re doing.”
Arsenal and Russo head into the winter break with confidence, eagerly awaiting the Champions League quarter-final draw on February 7.
“We’re all feeling really positive as a team,” Russo said. “We’ve been working really hard. I know it sounds cliche, but we’ve done it. With the players and staff we have, I will always support us.”
