Nigeria to Boost National Grid by 150MW Before 2025
Nigeria’s Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu revealed plans to leverage progress on the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) to expand the national grid’s capacity by 150 megawatts by the end of the year. After a meeting between Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Adelabu said 80 per cent of the pilot phase had been completed, including the installation of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substation. Adelabu said that the upgrade has increased the transmission network capacity by 750MW, which will contribute to the relative stability of the power grid. The minister assured Nigerians that the first phase of the project would improve the reliability of the grid. However, he said an overhaul of the national grid was crucial to ensuring future stability. While ongoing upgrades aim to address systemic issues, challenges such as aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and limited generation and distribution capacity continue to disrupt the nation’s electricity supply, affecting households and industry.
