Mauritius Declares Former Central Bank Governor Wanted Amid Fraud Probe
Mauritius police have issued an arrest warrant for former central bank governor Harish Kumar Seegolan on charges of conspiracy to commit fraud. Sigolam is currently abroad and will be detained upon his return. The police anti-money laundering unit launched the operation after new Prime Minister Naveen Ramgoolam accused the previous government of falsifying GDP, budget deficit and public debt figures for years. Ramgoolam’s report also accuses the central bank under Seegolam of printing money to fund the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC), which was established in 2020 to help Mauritian businesses cope with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ramgoolam criticized the alleged action, calling it irresponsible and claiming it harmed the monetary system. Ramgoolam has twice served as Prime Minister of Mauritius and was re-elected for a third term last month.
