Chelsea ‘are not ready’ but are they genuine title contenders?
Cole Palmer is largely on the sidelines when it comes to winning a championship medal in 2022-23, a season in which he has made 14 appearances for Manchester City, 12 of which have come as a substitute.
But he has been a key player for Chelsea since arriving in September 2023, his performances earning him a place in the England squad and now pushing the Blues within striking distance of the top spot.
Arguably the best player of the season so far, only Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland have scored more goals in the Premier League this season than the attacking midfielder, while he has also registered more assists. Ranked fifth in the league.
Center Nicholas Jackson also returned healthy, scoring 8 goals in 14 appearances. The goals per 90 minutes rate has increased significantly from 0.35 in the 2023-24 season to 0.65 this season.
His shooting accuracy has risen from 65% to 75%, with the Senegal international aided by Palmer’s close range and a wide feeder line with the likes of Noni Maddue, Neto and Jadon Sancho.
But there are also signs that the midfield that the Blues have spent so much to build is now thriving.
Chelsea have been largely the subject of ridicule for spending around £1.5bn on young stars from around the world Long-term contracts.
However, the strategy appears to be paying dividends.
Argentina international Enzo Fernandez lives up to England’s record signing, while Romeo Lavia and Caicedo are forming an effective link-up.
Unlike several other potential contenders, Maresca is also able to field almost different starting lineups depending on the games his team plays and is able to take full advantage of the team’s depth.
Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole told TNT Sports: “It looks great. Maresca is the best coach of the season so far and he has to contend with the team.”
“Europe’s economy has been on an upward trend since last September, flawlessly.
“The midfield is dominant in most games. I still feel there’s a long way to go but if January comes and they’re only four points behind Liverpool I think they’re in contention for the title and more so than they are now. near.”
Former England and Tottenham Hotspur striker Peter Crouch added: “Maresca’s performance so far has been fantastic, getting rid of players he doesn’t want.
“It felt a bit unmanageable but he created a harmonious atmosphere. They all wanted to fight for the jersey.”
