Wolves 1-2 Ipswich Town: Frustration and anger as Gary O’Neil’s unity falls apart
Chairman Shi had only offered his support to the manager on Thursday, amid rumors linking the club with several managers including former Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
O’Neill was forced to defend his position after the defeat to West Ham and answered similar questions at his post-match press conference on Saturday night.
“I’m not interested in my position, I know what I do every day and I know the situation we’re in,” he said.
“I know it takes a lot of work to get this team to perform the way they do. People can blame me but some responsibility has to fall on the players.
“I am happy with myself as a coach, my standards and what I demand from the team. I also accept this difficult moment.
“That group of guys downstairs need me to help them get ready this week. I’m going to continue to fight for them and fight with them until I’m told not to.
“That doesn’t mean I think I won’t get fired. With every (bad) result, my chances of losing my job increase. It doesn’t concern me, it’s a situation that drives me to want to do better. “
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, whose side are three points ahead of Wolves, said he had been looking to exploit O’Neill’s situation and growing unease at Molineux.
“You always talk about the background of the opposition, what their campaign is like, what their format is like and what the crowds are likely to be like,” he said.
“It’s always an away game thing. If a team isn’t playing to the level they want to be, you know if you start well and get the first goal, the atmosphere will have an effect on the home team. We dealt with that well. “”
