Ampthill v Hartpury abandoned after referee Alex Thomas hit by ball
Ampthill’s Rugby League Championship game against Hartpury had to be called off after referee Alex Thomas was hit by a clearing kick in the first half.
He appeared to be brought down when he was cleared by Hartpury half Harry Bazalgate, with the visitors leading 14-0.
Thomas was treated on the field before being taken off on a stretcher.
The match, which was played in England’s second tier of rugby league, was called off after just minutes.
Bedfordshire side Apthill said in a statement: “We understand this decision will be disappointing for fans attending the game, but our first priority is that of the players and match officials. healthy.”
“Our thoughts are with Alex and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Hartpury started the race in fifth place, two places ahead of Ampthill, taking the lead through Ethan Hunt’s try.
Aristo Benz-Solomon scored shortly before the incident and the game ended after 28 minutes.
