Michail Antonio: West Ham players to visit team-mate in hospital after car crash
West Ham United players will visit teammate Michail Antonio in hospital this weekend as he continues to recover after his “miraculous” escape from a car crash, manager Julen Lopetegui said.
Antonio, 34 years old, had Lower limb fracture surgery after the accident on December 7.
The Jamaica international had to be released from the car and taken to a hospital in central London following the incident in Epping, Essex.
“We will visit him today or tomorrow,” Lopetegui said on Friday.
“But most of all we are happy because he is recovering well. We are close to him and his family and we wish him all the best for the rest of his days.”
“The best news about Michail Antonio is that he was able to talk to us before the (Wolves) game – (because) looking at the crash, it was a miracle (that he was okay).
“Now he is strong and he will spend the next few months recovering himself, first as a man and then as a player.”
Antonio is expected to remain in hospital for several weeks as he recovers from multiple injuries, the Palestinian News Agency reported.
The Hammers striker spoke to his teammates via video call during Monday’s 2-1 win over Wolves, wearing an ‘Antonio 9’ shirt ahead of kick-off.
Antonio is West Ham United’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, scoring 68 goals in 268 league games.
West Ham United return to the Premier League on Monday night away to Bournemouth.
