Robbie Savage: Macclesfield FC owner says it is a matter of time before manager leaves club
Robert Smethurst, owner of Maxfield Football Club, said it was only a “question of time” before manager Robbie Savage left the club to test at a higher level.
The 50-year-old Welsh took over as Silkman’s owner last summer but has since established contact with the club Smethurst acquires in 2020 Removal of McClersfield Town.
The club is now on the verge of advancing to the North of the National League as they occupy a 20-point mat on the Northern Premier League super division table, surpassing Worksop Town, second place, entering Saturday’s visit to Bamber Bridge.
“How long will he stay in Macclesfield,” Smethurst told BBC Manchester.
“Maybe we’ll be lucky to have him in another year. He’s now winning him in the club, and the league is higher.
“It’s just a matter of time when he proves himself and will no longer be in Macclesfield. I know that.”
Maxfield Football Club won two advancements in three seasons, last season when it was defeated by the Marines in the playoffs last season.
Smethurst said clubs could reach the British Football League, but acknowledging that the financial pressure of the National League would mean that future promotion push could be difficult if they eventually reach the fifth level.
He added: “Our ceiling could be the British Football League. That’s what we want to be. If we can get into the National League, maybe we’ll stay for a while.
“If you look at merchandise like Stockport County and Wrexham and what money they have to spend, then the money you need to get from it, you’re talking about phone numbers.”
