Kate O’Connor World Indoor silver after European bronze is ‘madness’

But the Dundalk woman immediately showed that she set a new 60 million personal best with an 8.30-second personal best.

1.81 million high jump–Another 1.464 million hits in the best two-thirds set by the Netherlands alone, which added her previous best score by 10 centimeters.

That allowed O’Connor to win second place in the Commonwealth Games Heptathlon Silver in 2022 at Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Although she fell to third place – just behind American athlete Taliyah Brooks – despite another long jump of 6.32 million personal best, Northern Ireland athletes led the Americans by 800m in the summed 800m to secure the silver medal.

She added: “I knew I had to beat the American girl to get silver, so that was just a plan. I just wanted to go out and run hard and fight until the end.”

“I’m not sure where she is, but in the last 50m I’m just thinking ‘How much silver do you want?’. I’m upgraded from European (bronze) so I’m really happy.”

O’Connor also told Athletics Ireland that she hopes her medals over the past two weeks will “really push multiple events in the country and let young athletes see what other options they have in track and field”.

After the footsteps of Marcus O’Sullivan, Paul Donovan, Frank O’Mara, Sonia O’Sullivan, Paul McKee and O’Rourke, she was just the seventh place medal in the World Indoor Championships.
