Nick Cushing’s ‘tactical masterclass’ as Man City beat Chelsea

Cushing released his emotions full time, smiling on his face as he clapped his supporters, walking around Joie Stadium.

He stayed to absorb the praise when they sang “Blue Moon” and shouted “City, City, City”.

Former city midfielder Izzy Christiansen described it as Cushing’s “tactical masterclass”, but he insisted that the foundation was laid, it was about faith.

“For me, it’s about making sure we can compete with the top teams. To win the trophy, you have to beat the best,” Cushing said.

“We have to be threatened at every stage of the game and have that presence. That’s how you win the nervous and critical game.”

Manchester City quickly imposed itself in a tense situation in the first half, but the motivation was shaking.

Cushing switched the formation in the second half, shifting from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 and shifting Miedema to form after returning from knee surgery in January to replace it with a significant impact.

After their defeat in the Cup final, he called for courage and confidence from him, Miedema believed they delivered the game.

“The Champions League night at Joey Stadium has been special so I’m glad to win,” Miedema told BBC Sport.

“You always want to start, but I’m not in a position where I can play four consecutive 90 minutes. We need to be smart.

“(Cushing) really hopes we can get forward and take risks. Sometimes we do a great job. Hopefully we can take it to another level on Sunday and Thursday.”
