England World Cup qualifiers: Thomas Tuchel says England must play with ‘hunger to win’
England manager Thomas Tuchel said he hopes the team will be “hungry to win” rather than “fear of losing” as he prepares for the Three Lions on Friday.
England began the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Albania at Wembley before facing Latvia on Monday.
England reached the European Championship final under former boss Gareth Southgate, but Tuchel criticized their way of playing in the 2024 Euro 2024.
“I feel nervous and stressed about the players’ shoulders. They don’t lose in the game,” Tacher said in a press conference Thursday.
“I want us to be excited, the desire to win and the desire to win… Accepting failure is part of that, especially in football.”
England lost to Italy in the 2021 European Cup final and then lost again against Spain four years later.
Southgate has been criticized for her safety-first style in the 2024 European Cup, with England scraping Serbia on the group stage before facing Denmark and Slovenia.
The victory over Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands was followed by the knockout stage, but Southgate was under fire for not being able to get the best performance from the star-studded team.
