Chinese Grand Prix: Lando Norris says no changes needed to McLaren car after new tests on flexible wings
Norris talked about McLaren’s issues and issued an order for him and teammate Oscar Piastri to not compete for position as they negotiate with the rear mark in the middle of a rain-affected Australian game.
“I really don’t know that, it’s actually just two laps we’ve walked through,” he said.
“The risky condition, if we both got off the track, we would look like idiots. Then he could play freely. We could play freely until then, and then last two or three laps, and then we could play freely again.
“It was stupid to risk anything that was marked by a vest. I was in a place and I thought I needed to bring these tires to lap 54 or something. Oscar pushed more.”
Norris said he and Piastri locked in the front row despite being “surprised” in Melbourne’s qualifying round, but he was still unhappy with the car’s behavior.
“I want something I want from a car, the highest front is hard to get,” he said. “I rarely have what the car in that prospect needs. But cars can still win races. If I don’t have what I want, I can still make the most of the car.
“Some compromises. When girls and boys try to talk to you, if I do want more front-middle corners, we can only get that when compromising on high or low speeds. It’s so complicated.
“We want the best all-around cars. But I think I’ve gotten a better understanding over the last few years. I just said, ‘Okay, give me the best cars and will adapt to what I have, even if it’s not the biggest gain I feel like I can get from it.”
“But I’ve learned more from driving and fall more into the idea of ‘giving me the best car, not the car I want’.”
