Boston Celtics sold to William Chisholm for $6.1 billion
Boston Celtics For sale Team ownership announced Thursday morning to pay William Chisholm $6.1 billion for $6.1 billion.
Chisholm is a co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group, a private equity firm. He used to work for the Boston-based Bain Company. Chisholm is a Georgetown, Massachusetts native and a Dartmouth graduate, the Boston Globe Report.
Chisholm said in a statement about the sale that he was a lifelong Celtic fan.
“Growing up on the North Shore and going to college in New England, I’ve been a hard-working Celtic fan all my life,” Chisholm said. “I understand the importance of the Celtics to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different from any other city in the country. I also know that as an organizational leader, I’ve worked hard for this challenge.”

Wyc Grousbeck’s role in the Celtics
WYC Grousbeck has been the majority owner of the Celtics since buying the team for $360 million in 2002. He called Chisholm a “real Celtic fan” and a “natural choice” to become the owner of the next control team.
“I know (Chisholm) thanks the Celtics for their importance and is passionate about winning on the court while fully committed to the community,” Grusbeck said. “It’s simple, he wants to be a great master.”
Grusbeck said he will continue as CEO and governor of the Celtics in the 2027-2028 NBA season.
Others who are part of the incoming group are Quincy businessmen Rob Hale and Bruce Beal Jr., a New York-based real estate company.
