The Boston Celtics basketball team is priced at US sports record $6.1 billion and is led by William Chisholm, co-founder of private equity firm Synchronous Technology Group.
Chisholm’s team will be approved by the governors of other teams of the National Basketball Association, which will receive a majority stake in the team this summer, according to a press release on Thursday. The team’s current Governor WYC Grousbeck will continue to play in his role in the 2027-2028 NBA season and become a partner at Chisholm.
A group, including Grousbeck’s family, bought the team for $360 million in 2002 and said they planned to sell a majority stake in the team shortly after winning last season’s NBA final.
The Celtics’ sale sets a new record for the U.S. sports team, with more than $6.05 billion in value when the Washington Commander was sold in 2023.
