Boston Celtics: NBA champions sold to US businessman William Chisholm for record $6.1bn
Chisholm, co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group, a California-based private equity firm, is from the Boston area and is a lifelong fan of the Celtics, who won the record 18th NBA title last year when he defeated Dallas Mavericks.
“Growing up on the North Shore and going to college in New England, I was a stubborn Celtic fan of my life,” he said.
“I understand the importance of Celtics to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different from any other city in the country.
“I also learn that as a leader of the organization, I have a responsibility to the people of Boston and I am ready for this challenge.”
WYC Grousbeck and the current ownership group bought the Celtics for $360 million (£277 million) in 2002.
Grousbeck will continue to serve as CEO and governor until the end of the 2027-28 season, until Chisholm controls team operations.
