Dan Burn in England squad: Defender’s rise from pushing trollies

Burn, 11, was released from Newcastle Academy and by the age of 16 he pushed trolls every week at a supermarket in his hometown of Blyth.

He played for non-league club Blyth Spartans before joining the Darlington League youth contract in 2009.

The lush green turf at St George’s Park must feel like a world as he is washing his own kit and bringing a busy lunch to his training.

When he passes the driving test, he will lead from Blyth’s Peugeot 206 to County Durham with three teammates and charge them gas payments as the trip takes more time than he gets from his job on Saturday.

Darlington’s financial problems were broken, accelerating his promotion to the first team, and he was impressed to ensure he moved to the Premier League team in 2011 at the age of 18.

Five years of league appearances at Craven Cottage have been rarely played, but have little stability.

He was loaned to Yeovil and Birmingham before transferring to Wigan Athletic Championship Club.

He returned to the Premier League when he signed Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018, and after returning to Wigan on his first loan, he finally got caught in the rhythm of the highest flight on his second attempt.

Burn returned to Newcastle in January 2022 and signed £13m and has since made 114 Premier League appearances for Eddie Howe’s side.

“It made me resilient,” he said. “I didn’t have a straight trajectory in my career.

“From 21-3 years later, I made my debut in the Premier League released by Fulham, I don’t care about people’s opinions – I know what I’m good at.

“I feel like I’ve been skeptical of me in my career. The people in Darlington wouldn’t say I’d sit here for a press conference for England. I think I should be here.”

Burn is part of Howe’s roster lost to Manchester United 2-0 in the 2023 Calabar Cup final.

Before the day’s Joy Pies loss, his father David – who once had Newcastle season tickets, he wrote a A touching letter to my son.,,,,, External

In the news, Bourne’s father described his pride and explained that he went from being rejected and “the troll that pushed Asda” to playing “the best” on the world stage.

On Saturday, David and his family were thousands who participated in the night before winning Liverpool in Covenn Gardens in London.
