South Africa Rushes to Replace Ousted US Ambassador

Pretoria is racing to appoint a new ambassador in the United States after Ebrahim Rasool’s sudden expulsion last week. Rasool’s harsh criticism of Trump – in a webinar last Tuesday – alleged support for Palestine led to his diplomatic downfall, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling him a “racially seduced politician who seduced Trump.” Since Trump returned to office, his removal has deepened African relations in the southern United States, and that relationship has worsened. South Africa’s International Court of Justice case against Israel and Trump’s claims, the land acquisition law was infringed on unfairly targeting whites in January, exacerbating tensions. While some officials urged Pretoria to return the deportation, others suggested a carefully selected envoy to drive the Mecca-dominated Washington landscape without further alienating U.S. policymakers.
