Rory McIlroy wins Players Championship with victory over JJ Spaun in play-off at Sawgrass
Rory McIlroy won the second player title title by racing in the three-hole play-off in Sawgrass.
This is the Northern Irish second PGA Tour champion this season and the 28th season of his career, in the most prestigious competition of the year in four majors.
“I’m proud to win the second player and I’m so happy,” said the world’s second place.
“This is my third time winning on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a great charm for me.”
McIlroy, a four-time minority champion, took the playoffs in the fifth 16-shot kickoff, running in the center of the fairway, and he could only win a PGA Tour, while Spaun only found tough games.
US World 57 cut his second into a green space bunker and took three bunkers from there for par, while McIlroy threw second in the center of the green, with the two eager for birdies.
McIlroy then found his T-shirt on the iconic 17th “Island Hole” and he found the green, but Spaun tucked the ball in the water effectively ending his hopes.
He scored six of three-Pirates and despite McIlroy’s three-point shooting percentage, his lead was three points.
Both players drove along the mission-driven right at No. 18, leaving them blocked by trees.
But McIlroy’s advantage is so great that he can use this to avoid burning bogey to win the gap. Spaun quarter, he picked up the ball and failed to complete the four-shot hole.
McIlroy added: “I feel very sad about JJ.” He hit a high percentage on the 17th, but it just jumped straight. ”
