Kinshasa Confirms Participation in Luanda-mediated Negotiations with M23 Rebels

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has agreed to direct peace talks with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in Angola, marking a shift in President Felix Tissekdi’s previous position against negotiations with the group. In January, when M23 occupied Goma and later Bukavu, the conflict escalated, capturing 7 million people. Therefore, Angola, which acts as a mediator in the conflict, organized a new meeting scheduled for March 19. Both sides have sent the delegation to Luanda where talks were held. Meanwhile, the United States is meeting with U.S. envoy Ronny Jackson to conduct a mining partnership in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to discuss economic and security cooperation. As tensions continue, negotiations may be a turning point in peace in eastern Congo.
