South Sudan’s Great Antelope Migration: Earth’s Largest Overland Mammal Migration

The Great Nile immigrants in South Sudan are the largest land mammal migration on Earth, even surpassing the famous Wilde Antelope migration in Serengeti. From the Boma Badingilo Jonglei landscape to Gambella National Park in Ethiopia, there are approximately 6 million antelope each year, including White-Eared Kob, Mongalla Gazelle, Tiang and Reedbuck. The discovery of this migration has become possible through aerial surveys conducted by the African Parks and the South Sudan government. The findings of the survey highlight the vulnerability of the region due to poaching and the need for emergency protection measures. This migration remains a crucial ecological event for wildlife in the region.
