Trump and Putin to hold call on ceasefire deal soon, US envoy says
U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will speak in the coming days as talks on a possible ceasefire in the Ukrainian Three Years’ War continue.
Steve Witkoff, the U.S. envoy who met Putin in Moscow on Thursday, told CNN that he expects to “call with the two presidents this week.”
“We also continue to talk to the Ukrainians,” he added. “We advise them on everything we are considering.”
Last week, the United States and Ukraine agreed to propose a 30-day ceasefire to Russia. Putin said he supports the ceasefire, but he also listed the difficult conditions for achieving peace.
“I think these two presidents will have a really good and positive discussion this week,” Witkoff said in an interview on Sunday.
He also said that in the coming week, the team of U.S. negotiators will meet with their counterparts in Ukraine and Russia.
Vickov added that he believes there will be an agreement “in the coming weeks.”
“I really hope we can see some progress here,” he said.
In his election, Trump repeatedly promised to end the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of neighboring countries in 2022, the “first day” of a new administration.
He has been in office for less than a month. Trump once called Putin, reportedly spanning 90 minutes Regarding the negotiations to begin immediately on the end of the war.
Witkov refused to answer a question about how Ukraine resolved the land occupied by Russia. Currently, Russia controls one-fifth of Ukraine.
The envoy said Trump is actively participating in diplomacy and back and forth.
For example, Vidoc said he and Putin ended on Thursday “within five to ten minutes” and he returned to the U.S. Embassy to introduce Trump, Vice Chairman JD Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.
“So the president is getting the latest news on what is going on in real time and he’s been involved in every important decision here,” he said.
