World Cup: Odermatt wins fourth consecutive alpine skiing title

Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt became the third skier to four consecutive World Cup Crystal Basketball Tournament, finishing second in Hafjell’s huge slalom.

Odermatt, 27, trailed in Norway’s compatriot Loic Meilard, to score five games in the World Cup season while also making his fourth straight slew of the fourth giant slalom crown.

Crystal Globes awarded four categories in the World Cup series at Alpine Skiing, Super-G, Giant Swivel and Rumble winners, as well as the overall championship award.

Only Austria’s Annemarie Moser-Proell and Netherlands-Australia-Marcel Hirscher have previously won four back-to-back titles in the World Cup.

Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen finished 16th in his home game, meaning he can’t beat Odermatt’s 1,596 points in the overall ranking, while the 2022 Olympic Giant Rapids Slalom Gold Medal now outperforms his competitors with a 635-point lead.

“It’s amazing to win this path to Earth,” said Odmat.

“If you know you’ve surpassed the world and haven’t done that yet, it’s definitely another kind of skiing – no wrong space.

“It helps a lot by putting this GS Earth in your pocket and now focusing on the last one on the downhill.”

Odermatt has won the Super-G title for the third consecutive year and is ahead of the downhill standings at the final meeting of the season next week at Idaho.

Kristoffersen will compete in Sunday’s slalom to close the meeting, which leads 77 points in France’s Clement Noel’s standings.
