Ethiopia’s Wheat Miracle Faces Scrutiny Amid Discrepancies in Production Figures

Ethiopia once relied on wheat imports, claiming to achieve self-sufficiency and export surplus under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s agricultural modernization plan. The country even reported wheat produced in Ukraine in 2023. But an analysis by economists suggests that wheat prosperity may be exaggerated. Independent production estimates and trade data show that Ethiopia has no figures claimed by the government, despite increasing wheat production. This difference has raised concerns about Ethiopia’s 129 million citizens and the success of other countries and multilateral organizations seeking to replicate the program.
